Sergeant Major John Robert Osborn. A name etched in the Osborn Memorial, a testament to extraordinary courage. Here at the Osborn Memorial in Hong Kong, we remember a man who defied death itself to save his comrades. It was December 19, 1941. The Battle of Hong Kong raged. Sergeant Major Osborn, serving with the Winnipeg Grenadiers, found his company divided and under heavy fire. He took command of his men and captured a strategic hill position, holding it against relentless Japanese attacks for three hours. Later that day, his company became completely surrounded. As enemy grenades rained down upon their position, Osborn repeatedly picked them up and hurled them back. Then, a grenade landed too close. There was no time to throw it back. With a shout of warning, Osborn threw himself onto the grenade, absorbing the blast with his own body. He died instantly, but his selfless act saved the lives of many. The Osborn Memorial stands as a poignant reminder of his bravery. His sacrifice earned him the Victoria Cross, awarded posthumously in April 1946. The Osborn Memorial, more than just stone and inscription, embodies the spirit of selflessness and sacrifice in the face of overwhelming odds. It is a tribute to a hero who gave everything for his fellow soldiers. Here at the Osborn Memorial, we remember Sergeant Major John Robert Osborn, a man whose final act defined a lifetime of courage.
