“Did you see that?” I asked, pointing to the whimsical bronze creatures. The fontána Záhřebská–Americká stands proudly at the intersection of Americká and Záhřebská streets. It is more than just a fountain. It’s a modern artistic statement.
Let me tell you a bit about the fontána Záhřebská–Americká. It was unveiled on August 30, 2005. This marked the completion of a significant renovation. The renovation improved Záhřebská street with repairs to the road and pavements. New greenery was also added.
The fontána Záhřebská–Americká was conceived by sculptor Miroslav Beš’dec. Beš’dec created a circular pool from žula. Žula is a type of granite. This pool is the fountain’s base. Around it, he placed bronze sculptures. These sculptures are zoomorphic. They depict abstract animals that also act as gargoyles.
Notice how the fontána Záhřebská–Americká is elevated. It sits in the middle of a roundabout. The roundabout itself is paved with yellow cobblestones. The fountain’s central feature is a bronze creature. It has a fish-like tail and a dragon-like head. Two other creatures reside at the pool’s edge. One resembles a lizard. The third is positioned near the fountain’s circular basin.
I wish we could see the fountain at night. The abstract animals are illuminated. This adds a different dimension to the art. Sadly, I saw it the day after St. Wenceslas day. The fountain was dry. I could only imagine the water flowing.
