Why is this tranquil square named after a composer? This, my friends, is Lortzingplatz. It’s a peaceful haven in the bustling city of Cologne. Lortzingplatz was designed between 1906 and 1908. A royal garden architect named Fritz Encke created it. He envisioned a multifunctional recreational space. The square was named after Albert Lortzing. He was a German composer, not particularly known for his gardening skills. The connection? Lortzing married Rosina Regina Ahles right here in Cologne on January 30, 1824. Sadly, World War II ravaged Lortzingplatz. It fell into disrepair and became overgrown. But its story didn’t end there. The Rhine Association for Monument Protection and Landscape Conservation recognized its significance. They designated Lortzingplatz as “Monument of the Month” in January 2001. This recognition sparked a revival. By 2002, the city restored Lortzingplatz to its former glory. They spent 120,000 euros on the project, carefully recreating Encke’s original three-zone design. Now, you see children playing, adults relaxing on benches. The legacy of both Lortzing and Encke lives on in this tranquil oasis.
