Seven thousand years ago, the embers of a fire pit glowed warmly at the Funabashi City Tobinodai Historic Site Park Museum. This isn’t a modern-day campfire, but a glimpse into the Jomon period. The Funabashi City Tobinodai Historic Site Park Museum stands on the very ground where these ancient people lived. The museum itself is a modern structure, utilizing indirect lighting to showcase its treasures. Inside, relics unearthed from the Tobinodai Shell Midden tell stories of daily life. This site holds the distinction of being the location of the first fire pit discovered in Japan. A 1993 excavation revealed the oldest remains interred together on flat plains in Japan, a discovery that echoed throughout the archaeological community. The museum brings these discoveries to life. Visitors can examine 7,000-year-old pottery, model fire pits, and recreations of pit dwellings. The second floor focuses on the Tobinodai Shell Midden. It showcases 23 pieces of earthenware, alongside realistic pit dwellings complete with recreated fires. Moving to the third floor, the story of Funabashi’s archaeological richness unfolds. With over 100 confirmed Jomon period sites in Funabashi, the city is a treasure trove of history. This floor exhibits artifacts from other sites around the city. It also hosts engaging workshops, primarily on weekends and holidays. Outside, the Archaeological Site Park extends the journey. Replicas of dwellings, shell middens, and fire pits dot the landscape, offering a tangible connection to the past. In spring, cherry blossoms paint the park in vibrant hues. The Funabashi City Tobinodai Historic Site Park Museum offers more than just artifacts behind glass. It’s a portal to a time long past, inviting you to walk in the footsteps of those who lived here millennia ago.
