The scent of incense hangs heavy in the air. Are you sensing it? That subtle aroma clinging to the very stones of Casa dei Mechitaristi Armeni in Trieste. This building whispers stories of resilience faith and a long journey across continents.

Before us stands Casa dei Mechitaristi Armeni a testament to the enduring spirit of the Armenian community in Trieste. Founded by the tireless Abbot Mechitar this order initially flourished on the island of San Lazzaro in Venice. They arrived in Trieste in the 18th century drawn by the city’s free port. In 1775 Empress Maria Theresa granted them Austrian citizenship. They purchased the Casa Ricci to use as a monastery seminary and printing press. A small chapel dedicated to Saint Lucy served their religious needs.

Napoleon’s era brought hardship. The Mechitarists were expelled to Vienna in 1810. Their possessions were seized and sold. Yet the flame of faith was not extinguished. In 1846 permission was granted for their return to Trieste. Archbishop Iacopo Bosagi championed their cause. The Armenian merchant Gregorio Ananian generously contributed to the construction of a new church.

Giuseppe Bernardi designed the building. Construction began in March 1859. The church was consecrated to Our Lady of Grace on May 1st 1859. Soon a boarding school was established. In November 1894 the church received a magnificent organ a gift from the Gorizia musician Julius Kugy. It was crafted in Vienna by the Rieger brothers. Sadly the original altarpieces including one by the Nazarene painter Federico Overbeck were lost. Another was donated by Archduke Maximilian of Austria.

The Casa dei Mechitaristi Armeni stands as a poignant reminder of both triumph and tribulation. Though now closed and sadly in disrepair its walls still echo the prayers chants and scholarly pursuits of generations of Armenian Mechitarists. It is a silent observer of Trieste’s rich and complex history a place where faith perseverance and the pursuit of knowledge intertwined to create a lasting legacy. The building’s very silence speaks volumes. It invites reflection on the enduring strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
