St. John’s West Toronto

From a simple Sunday school in a horse-drawn buggy to a grand stone edifice, St. John’s West Toronto has quite the story. We’re standing before its third and current home, a structure that has witnessed a century of Junction life. St. John’s West Toronto has been a constant presence here on Humberside Avenue since 1923. It’s a testament to the evolving community it serves. The original St. John’s sprung from humble beginnings in 1879. Julia Henry held a Sunday school in her home, sparking the religious fervor that led to the first church building in 1881. This modest wooden structure, located on what is now St. John’s Road, served the growing congregation for eight years. The second church, a grander brick building, opened in 1890. It stood as a beacon of faith for over three decades, witnessing the influx of British immigrants drawn to the burgeoning railway industry. The church even expanded in 1904 to accommodate the growing community. However, the ever-shifting demographics of the Junction and the rise of new residential areas called for a change. By 1923, St. John’s West Toronto found its current home on Humberside Avenue. The cornerstone was laid in May, incorporating the cornerstone from the second church. This act symbolized the continuation of faith and community. Remarkably, much of the material and furnishings from the previous building were integrated into the new design. This was a deliberate choice. The architects wanted the congregation to feel a sense of familiarity and continuity within their new spiritual home. The building, constructed with Credit Valley stone, quickly became a local landmark. Its bright interior, particularly the large Advent stained-glass window commemorating World War I sacrifices, captivated all who entered. The church, initially designed for 600, was upgraded to accommodate 900 during construction. It was truly a grand endeavor, costing $80,000, eventually reaching $90,000 with the organ installation. In 1953, St. John’s West Toronto underwent significant renovations. A new Holy Table and reredos, a mid-week chapel, a Baptistry, and a renovated Nave were among the improvements. The Narthex was completed, even adding a balcony for additional seating. Later, the purchase of the adjacent Parish House provided much-needed space for the bustling Sunday school and various church groups. St. John’s West Toronto adapted to changing times. In the 1980s, financial challenges led to innovative solutions. The Parish House was sold, and the Rectory was rented out. The proceeds created trust funds that supported essential maintenance and upgrades. These funds paved the way for the significant 1988 renovation. The church basement was transformed into a daycare center, which still operates today as the Early Enrichment Day Care Centre. An elevator was installed in the bell tower. This enhanced accessibility for all members of the community, a testament to St. John’s commitment to inclusivity. St. John’s West Toronto stands as a beacon of resilience and adaptation. Its walls have absorbed the echoes of a century of community life. It has served not just as a place of worship, but also as a hub for social justice, childcare, and support for those in need.
