Beneath our feet lies a story of rebellion. It is a story of injustice and a fight for equality embodied right here at Praça Francisco das Chagas. This square isn’t just a meeting place. It is a monument to a man who dared to challenge the established order.

Praça Francisco das Chagas stands as a reminder of Chaguinhas. He was a soldier who became a martyr. His story resonates even today.

Francisco José das Chagas also known as Chaguinhas lived in turbulent times. In 1821 Santos was a hotbed of political unrest. Chaguinhas a sergeant in the 1st Hunters Battalion saw firsthand the inequalities faced by Brazilian soldiers. They were paid less and treated worse than their Portuguese counterparts.

Imagine the frustration. The simmering resentment that finally boiled over. On June 28 1821 Chaguinhas and Joaquim José Cotindiba led a military revolt. They demanded equal rights and fair treatment for Brazilian soldiers. The mutiny lasted until July 6. The rebels even set fire to a Portuguese ship. They imprisoned Portuguese military personnel.

But their rebellion was crushed. The government sent troops from São Paulo to quell the uprising. Chaguinhas and Cotindiba were arrested and sentenced to death. Their crime was treason against the King.

They were brought to Largo da Forca which we now know as Praça da Liberdade. There they faced the gallows. But something extraordinary happened during Chaguinhas’ execution. Twice the rope broke. This led the crowd to believe that it was a sign of his innocence. People cried out that it was a miracle. They demanded his release. This event became known as “the torment of Chaguinhas”.

Despite the public outcry the authorities were unmoved. Chaguinhas was executed. But his story did not end there.

He became a folk hero. Chaguinhas became a symbol of resistance against injustice. People began to worship him as a saint. He was buried in the Cemitério dos Aflitos. This was a cemetery for the poor slaves and executed criminals. A chapel Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos was built nearby. People offered prayers and left tokens for the martyred soldier.

Even today his legacy lives on. The city of Santos established “Chaguinhas Week”. The Alesp held a public hearing to recognize him as an intangible cultural heritage of São Paulo.

Praça Francisco das Chagas is more than just a name on a map. It is a place of remembrance. It is a testament to the courage of a man who fought for what he believed in. He is a man who became a symbol of hope for the oppressed. As you stand here reflect on the story of Chaguinhas. Consider the meaning of justice equality and resistance. This square is a tribute to a hero of the people.
