“The village of Chrustěn’s people,” the old woman muttered, her voice barely audible above the wind. “That’s what they used to call it, you know.” She gestured towards the scattering of houses that made up Chrustenice. The village seemed to bask in the afternoon sun, its tranquility a stark contrast to its centuries-old past. Chrustenice, first mentioned in a deed dating back to 1037, has witnessed the ebb and flow of time. Duke Bretislav I, a prominent figure in Bohemian history, once held dominion over this very land. For centuries, life in Chrustenice revolved around agriculture and quiet rural existence. However, the early 20th century brought about a change. The discovery of iron ore in 1907 transformed Chrustenice into a mining village. The clanging of pickaxes against rock became a familiar sound, as men toiled tirelessly beneath the earth. This era, though prosperous, proved short-lived. By 1965, the mine ceased operations, leaving behind a void eventually filled by the echoes of its past. Today, the village stands as a testament to both its rural roots and its brief stint as a mining hub. The legacy of its mining days lives on in the Chrustenice Mine Shaft, a preserved exhibit that offers a glimpse into the industry that once shaped the village.
