Can a school have two birthdays? Nerima Kuritsu Shakujii Higashi Junior High School can. It first opened its doors on May 1, 1947, as Itabashi Ward Shakujii Higashi Junior High. However, just a few months later, on August 1st, the district lines shifted. Itabashi Ward gave birth to Nerima Ward. Thus, the school was renamed Nerima Kuritsu Shakujii Higashi Junior High School. It officially became part of the newly formed Nerima Ward. This makes the school a unique piece of both Itabashi and Nerima’s history.
Now, imagine yourselves back in 1947. Post-war Japan was rebuilding. Amidst the rubble and uncertainty, education was a beacon of hope. This school, then housed within the walls of the former Itabashi Ward Shakujii East Elementary School, offered a fresh start for the children of the area. The school’s journey wasn’t always smooth. In October 1948, it relocated to the former Fushimidai Hospital. This site is now the present-day Shakujii East Elementary School. It was a community effort, a testament to the value placed on education. The move was not permanent, however. Nerima Kuritsu Shakujii Higashi Junior High would eventually find its current home on its second birthday, so to speak, when it swapped locations with Shakujii East Elementary in 1956.
Today, Nerima Kuritsu Shakujii Higashi Junior High School stands as a symbol of resilience. It has weathered numerous changes throughout the years. From curriculum revisions in 1955 to the construction of a new gymnasium and pool in 1969, the school has continually adapted to the evolving needs of its students. As of 2019, it educates over 500 students. It offers a diverse range of club activities from baseball and soccer to calligraphy and tea ceremony. It continues to nurture the dreams of future generations.
