A sprawling residential area. That’s Na Skraju. Its story begins long before its modern buildings. Centuries ago a small village called Wolica stood here. This wasn’t just any village. It held special significance. Its very name hints at its history. Wolica meaning freedom suggests its inhabitants enjoyed certain privileges. Perhaps tax exemptions attracted settlers. This freedom is a forgotten detail of Na Skraju’s past.
Wolica thrived for centuries. Petty nobility called it home. It lay on the road linking Warsaw and Czersk. This road now forms part of Nowoursynowska Street. Imagine life in 15th-century Wolica. The scent of freshly tilled earth. The sound of horses’ hooves on cobblestones. The villagers tending their fields of onions and radishes. Their small wooden houses. Thatched roofs sheltered them from the elements.
Sadly a fire devastated Wolica in 1908. Only two houses survived. Brick replaced wood. Na Skraju wasn’t built overnight. The construction of this modern neighborhood spanned from 1976 to 1981. It incorporated the land of the old village. Wolica’s remnants still linger. Kokosowa Street holds a piece of its legacy. The government acquired the land for Na Skraju. Compensation to the owners was minimal.
Na Skraju boasts impressive landmarks. The Multikino Ursynów multiplex stands tall. It was Warsaw’s first. The KEN Center shopping mall is another highlight. The Imielin metro station provides convenient access. This station opened in 1995. A church dedicated to Blessed Edmund Bojanowski stands on Kokosowa Street. Its construction began in 2001. The Polish Inventors Park is a recent addition. Its construction began in 2021.
Na Skraju is a blend of old and new. A residential area with multifamily buildings. Some are as high as 16 stories. Single-family houses dot the eastern edge. Na Skraju is a testament to Warsaw’s dynamic growth. A reminder that history and modernity can coexist. A place where the echoes of Wolica’s freedom mingle with the conveniences of modern life. This is Na Skraju. A neighborhood with a story to tell. A story waiting to be explored.
