In 1829, a seed was planted. That seed eventually grew into what we now know as the Wydział Inżynierii Mechanicznej. This is a story of evolution. It is a story of adaptation. It is a story of unwavering commitment to mechanical and industrial engineering.

The origins of Wydział Inżynierii Mechanicznej trace back to the 19th century. It began as the Preliminary School for the future Polytechnic Institute. In 1829, four faculties formed. Among them was the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. It had three chairs covering Engineering, Machine Building, and Mechanical Technology.

Over the years, the structure and name of the institution evolved. Great historical events could not stop its development and expansion. It stands today as one of the largest faculties of the Warsaw University of Technology. It educates nearly 3,000 students. As of last year, the faculty reverted to its original name. This name emphasizes its educational and scientific activities. It is now known as the Wydział Inżynierii Mechanicznej.

The Wydział Inżynierii Mechanicznej educates students in Production Engineering. This field combines structural, technological, organizational, and managerial aspects. The faculty employs around 200 teachers. Among them are prominent scientists recognized globally. They are authors of patents and licenses sold worldwide.

The faculty boasts well-equipped laboratories, computer labs, and research workshops. Numerous research, engineering, and technology projects occur here. Students are valued partners in these projects, working alongside professors, lecturers, and assistants. Graduates are highly valued professionals. Their accomplishments are recognized both in Poland and abroad. They have opportunities in almost every developed country.

The educational model used here mirrors those in Japan, the USA, and the European Union. Currently, the Wydział Inżynierii Mechanicznej is housed in three buildings. Two are located in the south at Narbutta Street. One is the Technology New Building, and the other is the Technology Old Building. A catwalk connects the flanks of the New Technology building. The third building is on Konwiktorska Street. This is where the Department of Printing Techniques is located.

In 1951, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering was officially established. In 1995, it adopted the name Faculty of Production Engineering. But it recently reverted to its original name. This name reflects its historical roots and broad scope. The faculty continues to shape future engineers and industry leaders.

Graduates from the Faculty of Samochodow i Maszyn Roboczych possess extensive knowledge in core subjects. They adopt an interdisciplinary approach to solving technical problems. They can use modern computer-aided tools for design and manufacturing. They are skilled in the operation and recycling of machines and vehicles. They are also prepared to work in teams. They also learn about environmental protection related to vehicle operation. The curriculum includes practical experience through a diploma internship.

Graduates are ready for creative work in design, manufacturing, and safety. They learn about the operation of mechanical and mechatronic devices. This includes cars, tractors, construction machines, and cranes. They can work in large corporations. They can work in the automotive, railway, and machinery industries. They can also work in research and development units. Smaller firms also seek their expertise.

The name “Inżynieria Mechaniczna” replaced “Mechanika Pojazdów i Maszyn Roboczych” in 2022. New specializations in second-cycle studies have been introduced since then.

The Wydział Inżynierii Mechanicznej at the Wojskowa Akademia Techniczna was formed in 1959/1960. It was the result of merging the Faculty of Armored and Automotive Troops, the Faculty of Aviation Troops, and the Department of Engineering Machines. It has been operating under its current name since 2019.

Currently, the Wydział Inżynierii Mechanicznej comprises the Institute of Vehicles and Transport. It includes the Institute of Robots and Machine Structures. Also the Institute of Mechanics and Computational Engineering. The faculty offers both military and civilian studies. These are available at the first and second-degree levels.
