In 1904 Gamla Enskede was born. It was Stockholm’s first garden city. A planned community designed to alleviate the city’s overcrowding. Gamla Enskede offered workers affordable homes. These weren’t cramped apartments. Instead they were charming villas. Many featured pointed roofs on wooden houses.

The streets of Gamla Enskede are unique. They deliberately avoid straight lines. Instead the streets wind and bend. This creates a charming and unexpected layout. It’s quite unlike the grid system of many other cities. The design was inspired by English garden cities. This resulted in a beautiful and natural feel. It is a far cry from the dense urban sprawl of central Stockholm.

Gamla Enskede’s history extends beyond its housing. The district also includes two cemeteries. Sandsborgskyrkogården was established in 1895. Skogskyrkogården opened in 1920. This woodland cemetery is a masterpiece of landscape design. It’s both a place of remembrance and remarkable beauty. Famous residents such as singer Helen Sjöholm once called Gamla Enskede home. Bo Kaspers Orkester’s Bo Kaspers also lived there.

The initial plan for Gamla Enskede included terrace houses. However these didn’t sell well. People preferred standalone homes. This resulted in a mix of houses and small villas. The city also offered loans to encourage homeownership. This made owning a house more accessible. Gamla Enskede became a unique mix of architectural styles. Many houses followed standard designs. Others reflected the unique tastes of their owners.

Initially Gamla Enskede lacked workplaces. Residents were expected to commute. The proximity to central Stockholm and improved public transportation made this manageable. However this situation changed over time. Gamla Enskede grew and evolved. It became a vibrant and self-sufficient community.

Gamla Enskede’s legacy is considerable. Its innovative design was groundbreaking. It inspired similar garden city developments. Gamla Enskede’s beautiful streets and unique architecture are still admired. It is a testament to thoughtful urban planning. Gamla Enskede remains a cherished part of Stockholm. A place where history and natural beauty coexist.
