From a railway platform echoing with the Astro Boy theme tune, you can see Niiza. Niiza City isn’t just another Tokyo suburb. It’s the southernmost city in Saitama Prefecture, a place where nature and urban life intertwine. Niiza sits on the Musashino Plateau, less than 25 kilometers from Tokyo’s heart. The Yanase and Kurome Rivers weave through the city, bringing a touch of tranquility to this bustling area. Niiza is a city of contrasts, a place where the echoes of history mingle with the rhythms of modern life.

Niiza’s history stretches back centuries, to a time when it was part of Shinra County, settled by immigrants from the ancient Korean kingdom of Silla. Later, the county’s name changed to Niikura. That name ultimately evolved into the Niiza we know today. Niiza City officially emerged in 1970. The city’s journey reflects its unique position, bridging the gap between ancient traditions and modern progress.

Niiza offers convenient access to Tokyo via the Tobu Tojo Line and Seibu Ikebukuro Line. You can reach Ikebukuro Station in about 20 minutes by express train. Niiza is also well-connected by road, with the Kan-etsu Expressway providing easy access to destinations further afield. Interestingly, Niiza is home to Shiki Station, despite its location in Niiza City, not Shiki City. This quirk of history adds a touch of intrigue to the city’s story.

Niiza boasts a gentle landscape, a network of refreshing streams, and abundant greenery. It’s a haven for those seeking respite from the urban sprawl. The Nobidome Canal, once a vital source of drinking water, now offers picturesque walking paths where you can immerse yourself in nature. Three universities call Niiza home: Rikkyo University, Atomi University, and Jumonji University. These institutions play a significant role in the community, contributing to the city’s vibrant atmosphere. Niiza is known for its commitment to education and child-rearing support, a testament to its family-friendly environment. Niiza is also home to a significant Toppan Printing factory and numerous light manufacturing, electronics, and transportation/warehousing companies.

If you visit Niiza between June and September, be prepared for potential rainfall. The average rainfall during these months ranges from 137.1 mm in July to 209.8 mm in September. The warmest month is August, with average high temperatures around 31°C, while January is the coldest, with lows around 3°C. As you leave Niiza, remember its unique character. It’s a city rich in history, brimming with educational opportunities, and blessed with a harmonious blend of nature and urban convenience. Niiza is more than just a city. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of community and the dynamic interplay between past and present.
