Behold the Venus of Langenzersdorf. This isn’t just any statue. This small clay figurine is a window to a time long past.

This remarkable sculpture stands as a testament to the Lengyel culture. It dates back to around 4825 BC. Imagine the hands that shaped this 18-centimeter figure. They worked with dark brown clay. Tiny stones were mixed in. The clay was molded and then fired.

The Venus was unearthed in 1955. It was found in four pieces near a hearth. Archaeologists found it in a settlement on the Bisamberg mountain. They placed its creation in the context of the early Lengyel culture. The first fragment a right thigh was found on December 21 1955.

Notice the elongated upper body. See the relatively short lower body. The prominent hips were likely a symbol of fertility and fecundity. The arms are only hinted at. They are stretched to the sides. The breasts are not overly emphasized. The head sits atop a long neck. It is abstract without a recognizable face. Unlike Upper-Paleolithic figurines the pubic triangle isn’t emphasized.

A fascinating detail this little figurine was used in marketing. Since 2000 its image graces bottles of Venus-Cuvée wine. A local Lower Austrian wine blend. This small sculpture connects the ancient past with the modern world.

The Venus of Langenzersdorf. A tiny treasure. It whispers tales of a Neolithic past. It showcases the artistry and beliefs of a long-gone culture. It stands as a powerful symbol of fertility and a testament to human creativity. A truly remarkable find.
