In 1905, Stockholm bought the land. The city planned the new district of Årsta. Construction began in the 1940s. The vision of Storängsparken started to take shape.
Until the 1970s, Valla Stream flowed through the park. Rainwater from Årstafältet also passed through here. Then, everything was put into pipes. The polluted water was diverted into tunnels. Årstaskogen’s ravine dried up. A natural feature disappeared.
But nature found a way to return. Now, Årstafältet has Valladammen. It is a constructed dam. It collects and cleans rainwater. Since June 2007, the water flows back. It travels through pipes to a new wetland in Storängsparken. From there, it goes into Årstabäcken’s old course. It runs through Årstaskogen to Årstaviken. Årstaskogen’s ravine has been restored.
The park is about 400 by 100 meters. That is 4.9 hectares. It is a significant green space. Storängsparken is located at the northeastern end of Svärdlångsvägen. It extends south towards Årstafältet.
