Minamoto no Yorimitsu, a prominent figure in Japanese folklore, prayed for victory at Baba Hachiman Shrine. Baba Hachiman Shrine stands as a testament to the rich history of the Hitachi\u014cta area. Established in 1056, it originally housed a divided spirit from the revered Iwashimizu Hachimangū Shrine in Kyoto. Minamoto no Yorimitsu, on his way to quell the rebellion of Taira no Tadatsune, stopped here to offer prayers. This act solidified Baba Hachiman Shrine’s connection to victory and divine favor. The shrine’s early history is intertwined with the Satake clan. They served as its protectors and built its first structures. A devastating fire in 1574 destroyed much of the shrine complex. But the main hall you see today dates back to a reconstruction in 1580 by Satake Yoshishige. Look closely at the wooden carvings adorning the pillars. Each face of these carvings tells a unique story, showcasing the dynamic artistry of the Momoyama period. The shrine’s layout is a captivating blend of styles, reflecting its evolution over time. Later renovations under Tokugawa Mitsukuni further enhanced its prestige. The shrine became a central place of worship. It served not only Baba but also surrounding towns like Masui, Ue-Daimon, Shimo-Daimon, and Shinjuku. In the past, a grand procession known as the “Tsunabirashimizu Shinji” took place every five years. This procession journeyed from the shrine all the way to the shores of Hitachi-Daigo in present-day Hitachinaka, showcasing the shrine’s deep connection to the community and the sea. Baba Hachiman Shrine continues to be a place of reverence and celebration, echoing the prayers and hopes of generations past.
