Hidden amongst the vibrant tapestry of Stockholm lies a quiet village, Stockby. What secrets does this unassuming place hold? Let’s uncover them together. Stockby is more than just a name on a map. It’s a place steeped in history, a village whispering tales of ancient settlements and modern industry. Stockby is located in the region of Uppsala. It’s approximately 54.1 km from Uppsala and 97.9 km from Stockholm. Imagine standing here centuries ago, surrounded by vast farmlands. Stockby was once one of the earliest inhabited places on Lidingö island. Archaeological evidence points to large burial mounds from the younger Iron Age (600-1050 AD). Imagine the lives lived here so long ago, their rituals and beliefs etched into the very land we stand on. Life in Stockby revolved around Stockby gård, a farm that was active until the 1960s. The farm’s main building, a grand wooden structure built in 1815 by Lieutenant Colonel Klas Hallencreutz, stood overlooking Stockby lake. The name Stockby itself is thought to originate from the log-covered crossings that once spanned the marshes in this area. One such crossing was in the Vastra Långängskärret, which is now a bird sanctuary. Stockby gård witnessed a turbulent history, changing hands multiple times throughout the 19th century. A devastating fire in 1850 led to its reconstruction, and it later served as housing for farmhands. By 1885, the land was divided into plots for summer cottages. The last owner, Johan Wilhelm Wirström, sold the entire 51-hectare property to Lidingö in 1919. Today, Stockby is a hub of small industries, reflecting the diverse nature of Lidingö’s economy. You can find everything from a craft village with 20 businesses, to a car recycling center. The village is also home to the Lidingö sports center, with its illuminated jogging trails and outdoor exercise equipment. In the winter, skiers glide along the trails stretching towards the open fields of Långängen. Tucked away within Stockby is Trasthagen, a unique area of preserved summer cottages dating back to the late 1880s. This area maintains its original architecture and historical charm, offering a glimpse into Stockby’s past. Stockby is a place where history and present-day life intertwine. From ancient burial grounds to modern industries, from bustling workshops to serene lakeside views, Stockby is a microcosm of the dynamic spirit of Sweden.
