Can you believe this charming house almost met the wrecking ball? Here we stand before Rush House, a testament to West Vancouver’s past. Built in 1923, Rush House stands as a reminder of a time when this bustling area was a tranquil farm. Its builder, Major Frederick Rush, a World War I veteran, envisioned a peaceful life here. He transformed this plot into a 0.73-hectare farm. The house itself is a beautiful example of Craftsman architecture. Rush House boasts many classic features of this style. It originally sat amidst fields of hay, a world away from the Ambleside we know today. In 2017, Rush House faced demolition. Developer Michael Geller proposed moving the house 30 feet east. His plan included building two new cottages on the lot. This sparked a debate in the community. While some neighbours worried about their views, others championed the preservation of this historic gem. The North Shore Heritage Preservation Society recognized its significance. They praised its classic architectural features and its representation of West Vancouver’s rural beginnings. Council ultimately voted to save Rush House. The decision allowed Geller’s development while granting the house permanent heritage protection. This compromise reflects the ongoing tension between development and preservation. It acknowledges the need for new housing while respecting the community’s history. Rush House remains, a charming relic of a bygone era. It offers a glimpse into West Vancouver’s past, amidst the modern landscape.
