The story of St Mary, St Bakhomios & St Shenouda Coptic Church began in 1989. The Coptic community started gathering. They initially hired the Sylvania High School hall for worship in June 1991. This marked the humble beginnings of a vibrant parish.
From September 1991 to April 1993, the community worshipped at St Mark’s Anglican Church in Sylvania. In January 1993, they purchased land for a church building. Services were then held in a factory near the building site.
The foundation stone for St Mary, St Bakhomios & St Shenouda Coptic Church was laid in September 1993. His Holiness Pope Shenouda III laid the foundation stone. This was a significant moment for the growing congregation.
The official opening and consecration took place on December 8, 1996. His Holiness Pope Shenouda III officiated. This event marked a milestone in the community’s journey. It provided them with a permanent place of worship.
In 2006, St Mary, St Bakhomios & St Shenouda Coptic Church celebrated two important anniversaries. They celebrated the 10th anniversary of the church building’s opening. They also celebrated 15 years since the parish’s establishment. These celebrations highlighted the church’s growth and its importance to its members.
Today, St Mary, St Bakhomios & St Shenouda Coptic Church continues to thrive. It is part of the Diocese of Sydney & Affiliated Regions. HG Bishop Daniel provides guidance.
The church offers regular services. A Sunday English Liturgy is held from 7:30 am to 11:00 am. A Saturday Liturgy takes place from 8:30 am to 11:00 am. These services provide opportunities for worship and fellowship.
Several dedicated clergy serve the parish. Fr Tadros El-bakhoumi, Fr Bakhomios Erian, and Fr John Sorial minister to the community’s spiritual needs. Fr Pakhomious Badyee is also among the church fathers.
