Whispers of history linger here at Kenepuru tua tahi. This isn’t just a bridge. It’s a thread connecting past and present. Kenepuru tua tahi stands as a silent witness to centuries of life. Its strong beams bear the weight of stories untold.

Long before the bridge’s construction the valley was known as Te Kenepuru. Ngati Toa Rangatira thrived here. The stream provided eels and whitebait. Fertile lands sustained them. Their footsteps echoed in this very valley. They used a main track following Te Kenepuru stream. This track led to Wellington before branching off to Takapu.

The arrival of the New Zealand Company in 1839 forever changed this landscape. Their quest for land threatened Ngati Toa’s way of life. They sought to acquire land to sell to British settlers. The Treaty of Waitangi loomed. The Company raced against time to secure land purchases before the treaty could prevent the sale.

Later Section 48 of the Porirua District became important. William Best farmed it. His son Elsdon Best became a renowned scholar. In 1925 the government purchased Section 48. This was needed for the Tawa Flat Railway Deviation. This replaced a steep winding railway line. It ran from Tawa Flat through Johnsonville to Wellington. After the deviation was completed in 1937 some of Section 48 was sold. 26 acres were kept for a future Post Primary School.

Today Kenepuru tua tahi is more than a simple structure. It’s a symbol of resilience and connection. It bridges not just a physical gap but also the gap between past and future. It links a rich history with the modern world. Each time you cross this bridge remember the stories woven into its very foundations. Remember the Ngati Toa Rangatira. Remember the struggles and triumphs of this land. Remember Kenepuru tua tahi.
