Around 12 BC Argentoratum was founded. This was the Roman camp that became Strasbourg. The Foyer de l’Etudiant Catholique stands at the heart of this ancient castrum.
In the 8th century the Saint-Étienne monastery was established. Adalbert brother of Sainte Odile founded it. The current Place Saint-Étienne gets its name from this monastery. The Sainte-Croix chapel stood on the Foyer de l’Etudiant Catholique site. Later it became a basilica. The chapel was destroyed on January 2 1553. It was old and unnecessary due to other nearby places of worship.
In 1598 Thierry Böcklin von Böcklinsau built a private residence here. This was for his family. The Renaissance style is still visible today. The facade staircase and Salle Léon XIII remain. In the 17th and 18th centuries the building housed the Directoire de la noblesse de Basse-Alsace. In 1921 the Société de Saint-Vincent-de-Paul acquired the site. They established a center for Catholic youth.
The Foyer de l’Etudiant Catholique now has 161 beds in single and double rooms. Each room is furnished. They include a sink shower-toilet refrigerator telephone and hot plate.
