“A time capsule, you say?” a curious voice piped up from the crowd. We are gathered right here at All Saints Church in Hataitai. It’s a place with a story more intricate than its elegant brick facade might suggest. All Saints Church stands as a testament to the growth of this area. Back in 1894, the first church on this site was a humble wooden structure. Affectionately dubbed the “Kilbirnie Church Room,” it served a community just discovering its footing. But as Hataitai blossomed, so did the congregation. By 1927, the dream of a new, permanent church was finally within reach. The old church hall was carefully disassembled, making way for a grander structure. Designed by renowned architect Frederick de Jersey Clere, the new All Saints Church was to be a beacon of faith. The foundation stone was laid in November 1927, and excitement filled the air. A sealed copper urn was placed within, a time capsule for future generations. It contained photographs, newspapers, even church newsletters – snapshots of a bygone era. Finally, on September 14th, 1928, All Saints Church opened its doors. The air buzzed with excitement as the community gathered, their hearts filled with pride for this new spiritual home. All Saints Church isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community that continues to shape Hataitai today.
