“Skating wonderland or serene summer stroll?” That is the question many ask themselves when visiting Trekanten.

Trekanten or The Triangle is a small lake in south-central Stockholm. It offers a unique experience depending on the season. Trekanten is more than just a body of water. It is a place for recreation and relaxation for locals and tourists alike.

In winter, Trekanten transforms into a sheltered frozen wonderland. The city council ploughs the ice creating a skating track. Families and kids frequent this spot for outdoor fun. There is no skate rental, café, or toilets at the lake. But the joy of skating on a natural ice rink is unmatched.

During summer, Trekanten becomes a serene place for leisurely strolls. Paths and boardwalks surround the lake. Various bird species are attracted to the area. It is a perfect spot for birdwatching and enjoying nature.

Trekanten has a drainage area of 60 ha. The lake’s surface area is 13.5 ha. Its average depth is 4.3 m. The maximum depth is 7.0 m. The water volume is 570000 m3. The shore length is 11690 m. The surface elevation is 0.67 m.

The lake’s catchment area is surrounded by residential areas. Grondal is one of them. About 30% of the area is settled land. Major traffic routes pass through the area.

Historically, small scale industries flanked the lake. Tanneries, dye, and creosote works were present. Until the early 1960s sewage and overflow water was guided into the lake.

Potable water was poured into Trekanten in the early 1980s. Water from the bottom was pumped out. This reduced phosphorus levels. But it failed to affect nutrients and oxygen depletion. Levels of lead and copper are high.

Trekanten’s flora and fauna are representative of Stockholm. The lake forms a natural link between Arstaviken and Vinterviken bays. Phytoplankton stock is dominated by green algae in late summer. Blue green algae are present. These are carefully monitored near the bathe.

Common vegetation is found. Crack willow and the hybrid between white willow and bay willow grow on the southern shore. Aquatic plants include white waterlily and amphibious bistort.

An inventory in 1997 found 29 species. These included freshwater gastropods, fireflies, and leeches. A rotenone treatment in 1986 did not affect crucian carp and signal crayfish. Perch was introduced. Northern pike and roach found their way in. Carp, rainbow trout, and signal crayfish have been planted.

Thrush nightingale, common chaffinch, garden warbler, and blackcap are present in early summer. Mallard, Eurasian coot, tufted duck, and great crested grebe are common. Heron visit the lake. Common merganser fish here during winters.

Trekanten offers picturesque panoramic views. Sunbathing chairs are available along the lake. A creaking bridge adds excitement. It is easily accessible from Liljeholmen metro station.

Whether you seek winter skating or summer serenity, Trekanten welcomes you. Enjoy the views. Breathe the air. Create lasting memories at this charming Stockholm lake.
