“Imagine convicts trudging through these streets.” That’s what you might hear standing outside Te Aro School. Te Aro School has a surprising past. This vibrant primary school wasn’t always a place of learning. Let’s step back in time.

Te Aro School is one of New Zealand’s oldest schools. It opened its doors in 1854. However, it is not the oldest in Wellington. Thorndon opened two years earlier. Today, it stands on The Terrace. It is nestled between Victoria University, Cuba Street, and Aro Valley.

But before the classrooms and playgrounds, this site held a different kind of history. Convicts once flattened this very land. They built the infamous Terrace Gaol here. Imagine prisoners waking at 7 am. They had just 30 minutes to clean up and eat. Then, they marched into the city. They built the roads we still use today. The worst prisoners wore heavy chains. They were a visible presence in Wellington.

One story echoes through time. A returned serviceman named Harry Brown was arrested for vagrancy. He was sent to work demolishing the old prison to make way for Te Aro School. Tragically, the hillside collapsed. Harry was killed.

Today, Te Aro School is a full primary school for Years 1 to 8. Principal Sue Clement leads the school. Around 220 students attend. They come from over 30 different cultural backgrounds. The school celebrates this diversity.

Te Aro School values whanaungatanga, manaakitanga, ako, and kaitiakitanga. These values guide teaching and learning. Students are encouraged to be confident, kind, curious, and resilient. Teachers see each student as an individual. They nurture their strengths.

The school emphasizes literacy and numeracy. It also focuses on Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Te Ao Māori. Students learn to be guardians of the world around them. It is a diverse inclusive caring community.

The location of Te Aro School provides unique benefits. Its central Wellington location offers access to cultural and social amenities. It is close to Victoria University. This allows collaborative opportunities.

While here, think about the ground beneath your feet. Consider the history of the land on which Te Aro School stands. From a prison built by convicts to a place of learning, Te Aro School is a historic landmark. Today, Te Aro School continues to evolve. It prepares students to thrive in a multicultural world.
