Whispers of Dooral-Dooral. The name itself evokes a sense of mystery doesn’t it? This is Dural. We stand on land once home to the Darug people. Their language gave us the name Dural a name that means a smoking hollow tree. Imagine the smoke rising from the trees centuries ago. The Darug people lived here long before European settlers arrived.

Dural is a semi-rural suburb of Sydney. It’s located about 36 kilometers northwest of the city center. It’s part of the Hills District a region known for its beautiful scenery and peaceful atmosphere. But Dural has a rich history that stretches back centuries.

The Old Northern Road cuts through Dural. This historic road was built by convicts between 1825 and 1836. They linked early Sydney to the fertile Hunter Valley. Think of the incredible effort it took to build that road. The convicts faced tough conditions. They built the road with simple tools and incredible determination.

A sandstone chapel St Jude’s Church stands near the Old Northern Road. It was built around 1846. A local settler James Roughley donated land for the church. The chapel is now listed on the Register of the National Estate a testament to its historical significance.

Dural’s story isn’t just about convicts and chapels. It’s also about community. A thriving community continues today. Dural has schools sporting clubs and even a post office that opened in 1864. The area has also been featured in television shows. Can you believe that? It was even a filming location for the popular game show It’s a Knockout. The show filmed here between 1985 and 1987.

The diverse population of Dural is interesting. In 2021 census data showed a multicultural community. Many residents were born in Australia. However significant numbers also came from China England India and other countries. The median weekly household income was quite a bit higher than the national average. A testament to Dural’s success.
