“Twenty minutes” I heard someone exclaim. That is all it takes now to travel between the bustling city of Shenzhen and Zhongshan. We are standing near the Bogong’ao Bridge. But this bridge is only a small part of the bigger picture.

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link includes the Bogong’ao Bridge. The entire link boasts a series of bridges and tunnels. These start from Bao’an International Airport on the Shenzhen side. It opened on June 30, 2024. It dramatically reduces travel time. The trip now only takes about 30 minutes. Previously the journey took two hours.
This mega project includes two artificial islands. It also has an underwater tunnel. The whole link spans 24 km. It features eight lanes. Cars can travel up to 100 km per hour.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link cost around US$4.83 billion. Its construction started in May 2017. The link sits 32 km north of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.
Shenzhen initially wanted to be part of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge project. The government chose a single-Y design in 2004. This excluded Shenzhen. A separate link to Zhongshan was proposed in 2008.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link includes a 6.7 km tunnel. It has 19 bridges that total 43 km. About 15.5 km of the bridge stretches above the sea.
In the first month after opening, over 3 million vehicles crossed the link. The Bogong’ao Bridge forms a vital part of this route. It is a small section within this large infrastructure project.
