Picture Borochov Hill a gentle slope overlooking the bustling city of Tel Aviv. This is Givatayim Municipality a place steeped in history and innovation.
Givatayim wasn’t always the thriving city it is today. In 1922 just 22 pioneers from the Second Aliyah established a small workers’ neighbourhood. They bought 300 dunams of land on the outskirts of Tel Aviv. This land became the Borochov Neighbourhood the first of its kind in the country. It was named after Dov Ber Borochov a founder of the Poalei Zion workers’ party.
These pioneers were more than just settlers. They were innovators. They established the country’s first cooperative grocery store. Imagine a time before supermarkets a time when community mattered. Their socialist beliefs led them to voluntarily transfer the land to the Jewish National Fund. This is a testament to their commitment to building a shared future.
Over time Givatayim grew. Shechunat Rambam a more bourgeois neighbourhood emerged. This created an interesting contrast with Borochov’s socialist roots. More neighbourhoods followed Sheinkin Givat Rambam Kiryat Yosef and Arlozorov. In 1942 these neighbourhoods merged forming a local council. In 1959 Givatayim officially became a city.
Givatayim is proud of its education system. Today it boasts 41 kindergartens nine elementary schools and four high schools. It has one of the highest secondary school matriculation rates in the country. A special high school exam assistance program initiated by Mayor Ruven Ben-Shachar even resulted in an 11% increase in high school test results in just three years.
The city is constantly evolving. Eurocom Tower a 70-story skyscraper stands as a symbol of modern Givatayim. Yet the municipality is careful to balance modernization with preserving its historical neighbourhoods. High-rise construction is promoted on the outer edges. The heart of the city its residential areas remain protected.
