Has anyone ever noticed how a building can whisper secrets? Here at Sankt Alfons – Pfarrkirche und Kloster, the whispers are particularly loud. This church, nestled in the Gartenstadt Keesburg district of Würzburg, isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to resilience, a canvas of modern art, and a keeper of captivating tales. Sankt Alfons, consecrated on November 7, 1954, is dedicated to Saint Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, founder of the Redemptorist Order. The Redemptorists have played a vital role in the spiritual life of this community, their presence woven into the very fabric of Sankt Alfons. The story of Sankt Alfons begins during the tumultuous years of World War II. Bishop Matthias Ehrenfried envisioned a church for the burgeoning Hindenburg-Siedlung, acquiring land in 1941. Initially intended as St. Arno, part of Unsere Liebe Frau parish, the project stalled. Post-war, the Gartenstadt Keesburg saw renewed growth. The church project was resurrected. It changed names, first to St. Petrus Canisius, and finally to Sankt Alfons when the Redemptorists agreed to oversee its spiritual direction. The striking design by architect Hans Schädel, the diocesan master builder, broke with tradition. The soaring, sloping roofline, likened to a ski jump, caused quite a stir. The interior is just as dramatic. Georg Meistermann’s massive altar fresco, depicting the “Heavenly Liturgy,” was controversial, dubbed by some as a “Martian painting.” Today, it’s a celebrated example of post-war religious art. Look closely. The fresco’s lower part represents Earth, the middle depicts the adoration of the Lamb of God, and the top shows angels of the Last Judgment. Meistermann also designed the unique baptismal font, a triangular black diabase basin. The font combines the baptismal and holy water elements, a symbolic representation of the Trinity. Another treasure is HAP Grieshaber’s “Way of the Cross of Reconciliation,” added in 1994. This series of woodcuts, originally created for Auschwitz, adds another layer of depth to Sankt Alfons. Outside, the freestanding campanile, completed in 1955, houses four bells. Each bell has a unique inscription. Together, their chimes resonate through the community, marking the passage of time and echoing the enduring spirit of Sankt Alfons – Pfarrkirche und Kloster. Sankt Alfons isn’t just a building. It’s a living story, told through art, architecture, and the enduring faith of its community.
