The stone stands tall as a monument to the 1965 initiative of Karl Axel “Kacke” Karlberg and Sven Gärdnerud to create a long-distance race for the average jogger. Not just a race but a challenge, a personal brag! This was a time when running, especially long distances, wasn’t as mainstream as it is today. The goal was to challenge people to push their limits, to go beyond what they thought possible. And so, the Lidingöloppet was born with 644 brave souls taking on the 30 km journey. It’s hard to believe it’s been over 60 years since that first race!
