Here at Plieninger Aussicht, we stand at the southernmost point of Stuttgart. It is about ten kilometers from the city center. Plieningen lies on the Filder Plain. This vantage point offers a unique perspective.

Plieningen is more than just a location. It is a district with a rich history. It was divided into five parts. These are Plieningen, Hohenheim, Steckfeld, Asemwald, and Chausseefeld. Each part contributes to the area’s unique character.

Let’s delve into Plieningen’s past. In 1747, the Old Town Hall was built in Mönchhof. Carl Eugen of Württemberg had the new Hohenheim Palace built on the moated castle in 1770. Birkach then emerged as a linear village with the Franziska Church.

Plieningen and Birkach were forcibly incorporated into Stuttgart on April 1, 1942. They were then managed as districts. In 1956, Stuttgart divided Plieningen into Plieningen, Hohenheim, and Steckfeld. This district was jointly administered with Birkach. Birkach initially consisted of Birkach and Schönberg. They shared a district town hall in Plieningen. From 1968 to 1972, Asemwald was built. This made Plieningen consist of four districts. In the late 1990s, the Chausseefeld residential area was established. It became an official district of Plieningen on January 1, 2001. Since then, Plieningen has consisted of five districts.

Plieninger Aussicht also has Roman roots. A Roman Jupiter column from 280 AD was found on the Körsch. A manor and other finds also indicate Roman settlement. The old army road Echterdinger Straße and Paracelsusstraße are old Roman roads.

Around 500 AD, the Pleonungen settled here. Around 600 AD, the original church of St. Martinus was built as a wooden structure. It was one of the first churches in the Filder region. In the 12th century, Hugo von Plieningen participated in a crusade to Jerusalem. The three roses on the rose branch in the coat of arms are said to come from this. The Lords of Plieningen have been documented in Plieningen, Esslingen, Göppingen, and Kleinbottwar since the 12th and 13th centuries. Plieningen’s oldest business is the Obere Seemühle. It dates back to the 12th century in the Körschtal.

Getting around Plieningen is easy. Two state roads connect Plieningen directly to the A 8. This connects Karlsruhe and Munich. The B 27 connects Stuttgart and Tübingen. The airport and the trade fair are also easily accessible. Public transport on the rails is provided by the U3 light rail line. It runs from Plieningen via Möhringen to Vaihingen. It now runs on the former Stuttgart-Möhringen-Stuttgart-Hohenheim railway line. The Filderbahn-Gesellschaft opened it in 1888. Over the years, it was integrated into the Stuttgart tram network. However, the Stadtbahn only stops on the edge of Plieningen. Several intercity bus lines serve as feeders. The SSB bus lines 65, 70, 73, 74, and 76 operate in the district. The bus line 122 of the GR Omnibus GmbH also runs here.

Plieningen is home to cultural attractions. These include Hohenheim Palace. It houses the Zoological and Veterinary Museum. The University of Hohenheim is also here. It features the Landesarboretum, Botanical Garden, and German Agricultural Museum. The Museum of Hohenheim History can also be found here. The Plieningen Local History Museum was in the Old Town Hall until 2009. Since May 2015, it has been located in the Zehntscheuer. The Evang. Martinskirche Plieningen is a monument and original church. It is a stone building from the 12th century. It is considered Plieningen’s landmark. The Stone Cross and Bildstockstein can also be seen. The Mönchhof is a historic center. The Körschtal includes the Upper and Lower Mills and the Mühlesee.

The Plieningen coat of arms has three silver roses with golden sepals on a blue background. The oldest known coat of arms of the village is from 1618. It shows the Württemberg deer pole in the upper part. The lower part has two rose bushes with two roses each. The oldest seal is from 1773. It only shows the three roses. All later seals show the three roses. The colors were determined in 1920 and officially awarded in 1935. The origin of the roses is unknown.
