The Glen Echo Park Aquarium opened its doors on September 19, 2015. Andrew Wilson, the aquarium director, chose this date, coinciding with International Talk Like a Pirate Day. It’s a fitting start to a place filled with adventure. Wilson had a long-held dream to create a space for learning about the Chesapeake Bay’s history. He wanted to highlight its fragile ecosystem.

Inside Glen Echo Park Aquarium, you’ll find live animal exhibits. They showcase the diverse marine life of the Chesapeake Bay. Marine artifacts enhance the experience. They help visitors appreciate our nation’s largest estuary. Follow water’s journey from rain clouds through the watershed to the Chesapeake Bay in the aquarium exhibit.

The Glen Echo Park Aquarium is relatively small. Its land area covers only 1,200 square feet. But it is packed with wonders. It is currently the only public aquarium in the immediate Washington D.C. area.

Before becoming an aquarium, this spot had a varied past. It once housed the Living Classrooms Children’s Museum. Before that, it was the Discovery Creek Children’s Museum. Even earlier, it served as stables for horses.

Families love the Glen Echo Park Aquarium. It focuses on children’s activities and learning. The staff are incredibly welcoming. They are also knowledgeable about the exhibits. They explain everything and engage children in fun, educational activities.

Glen Echo Park Aquarium also offers other opportunities. You can book private or semi-private marine biology tours. These tours are half an hour long and led by educators. Live animal habitats have periodic feedings. The aquarium hosts birthday parties for all ages. Outreach lessons are available for schools, classes, and daycares.
