Amidst the vibrant district of Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus sits the Paul-Richter-Hof. It stands as a testament to Vienna’s rich history and its commitment to social housing. The Paul-Richter-Hof isn’t just a building. It’s a story etched in brick and mortar, a narrative of architectural innovation and social progress. Built between 1956 and 1964, the Paul-Richter-Hof embodies the post-war spirit of rebuilding and providing modern housing for Viennese citizens. The architects, Rudolf Goder and Josef Angst, envisioned a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics. The complex consists of several blocks that gracefully follow the sloping terrain. They cleverly arranged these blocks to create two courtyards. One courtyard opens onto Dadlergasse, while a larger one faces Grimmgasse. This design provides a sense of openness while maximizing the use of space. The Paul-Richter-Hof is a microcosm of Vienna’s architectural evolution. The smooth plastered facades and simple window frames reflect the architectural trends of the 1950s. A prominent residential tower adds a distinctive touch. A later addition seamlessly blends with the original design. The large glass windows of the stairwells subtly mark it as a newer addition. The Paul-Richter-Hof is also an art canvas. Adorning the facade facing Dadlergasse is a captivating mural, “The Three Ages of Life”, created by Rudolf Heinz Keppel between 1957 and 1958. This artwork portrays the cycle of life. Children play with a puppy. Young mothers with strollers and toddlers are surrounded by doves, symbolizing innocence. Men hurrying to work are accompanied by chickens, representing diligence. At the top, elderly men sit with a sleeping dog, while crow-like birds circle above a group of old women, hinting at the passage of time. Ceramic reliefs above the entrances depict the four seasons, crafted by Alfred Kurz, a student of the renowned sculptor Fritz Wotruba. The Paul-Richter-Hof carries the name of a prominent figure in Viennese history. Paul Richter (1877-1958) was a dedicated social democrat and editor of the newspaper “Der Sozialdemokrat”. He lived in Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus from the age of three. A memorial plaque on the side facing Grimmgasse commemorates his contributions. The Paul-Richter-Hof stands not merely as a residential building but as a living testament to Vienna’s social and architectural heritage.
