“Floodlit field” might not be the first thing that springs to mind when you think of historical landmarks. Yet, here we are at Federation Park. It’s more than just a place for hockey and touch football. It’s a slice of Sydney’s history.

Federation Park has a fascinating story. It represents nearly four decades of campaigning by residents and the Glebe Society. They fought for public access to the foreshore. The Gadigal and Wangal people are the traditional custodians of this land.

The park’s name itself tells a tale. It was named in 1902. This commemorated the federation of the Australian colonies in 1901. A new road was built across the park. It linked Glebe Point and Chapman roads. It was aptly named Federal Road. Today, paving marks its route.

Look around you. This land wasn’t always a park. Much of the Glebe foreshore was reclaimed land. It wasn’t considered suitable for housing. Industries like tanneries and timber yards dominated the waterfront.

Notice the restored Glebe railway viaduct. It’s a reminder of the area’s industrial past. It was built in 1922. The viaduct provided freight access to the timber industry in Glebe and Rozelle. Army engineers may have been inspired by Roman viaducts.

The park was once split. In 1908, Annandale controlled 3 acres. Glebe had 12 acres. Glebe’s section became Jubilee Park in 1909. This marked 50 years of the municipality.

Take a look at the skate park. It’s a modern addition but it adds to the park’s appeal. It caters to skaters, scooters, and BMX riders of all abilities. The lights turn off at 9 pm so don’t stay too late.

Consider the playground. It’s a large adventure space for children. There are shaded areas and barbecues nearby. This makes it a great spot for families. Dogs are welcome too. They can run off-leash in designated areas. Just keep them away from the playground.

Remember the history as you stroll through Federation Park. It is more than a park. It’s a testament to community action. It’s a blend of industrial heritage and recreational space. It’s a place where history and modern life meet.
