This unassuming chapel, nestled in Silver Spring, Maryland, holds within its walls a rich history spanning over a century. The New Hampshire Ave Gospel Chapel’s story begins in 1916, not in Maryland, but in Washington D.C. A small group of believers, led by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ruebsam, began meeting in their home on Illinois Avenue. This humble beginning marked the birth of what would become a cornerstone of faith for many. The congregation, originally known as the Assembly of Christian Believers, moved several times over the years. From the Ruebsam’s home, they gathered in Twining City, then to rented spaces on H Street and 15th Street. Each move reflected the growth and perseverance of this dedicated community. In 1938, they achieved a milestone. They built their own building on South Dakota Avenue. The assembly officially incorporated as “Christians Gathered unto the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ”. Their new home was called Chillum Heights Gospel Chapel. As the congregation continued to grow, and members migrated to the suburbs, they set their sights on a new location. While their new chapel was under construction in Silver Spring, they temporarily held services at the Seventh Day Adventist church on Riggs Road in Adelphi. Finally, in May 1964, the New Hampshire Ave Gospel Chapel opened its doors at its current location. The Washington Post even covered the dedication. The article highlighted the $90,000 construction cost, the 200-seat nave, and the distinctive blue glass accents in the baptistery and foyer. The chapel’s design, with its laminated wood arches and thoughtful details, reflected the congregation’s dedication. With the move, Chillum Heights Gospel Chapel became the New Hampshire Ave Gospel Chapel, solidifying its identity in its new community. The chapel re-incorporated in Maryland in 1981. The New Hampshire Ave Gospel Chapel continues to serve its community. It is a testament to the enduring power of faith and the dedication of its members.
