Established in 1921 the I Liceum Ogólnokształcące has witnessed Poland’s turbulent history. The school was founded by the Worker’s Society of Friends of Children. Bolesław Limanowski became its patron.
Initially a primary school it transformed into a gymnasium in 1934. The gymnasium fostered socialist values. It shaped young minds. Jerzy Kreczmar served as its director from 1936 to 1939.
During World War II the I Liceum Ogólnokształcące went underground. Teachers risked their lives to provide secret education. The Warsaw Uprising devastated the school’s original buildings.
After the war, the I Liceum Ogólnokształcące rose from the ashes. In autumn 1945 it reopened at A. Felińskiego 15. The building once belonged to another school. The authorities recognized its importance.
The I Liceum Ogólnokształcące operated under the care of RTPD and later TPD. In 1948 it became a state entity. It was renamed Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Bolesława Limanowskiego. The Roman numeral I was added in 1966.
The school has been managed by the Warsaw-Centrum commune and the Żoliborz district. The I Liceum Ogólnokształcące continues to thrive. It offers modern facilities. These include interactive whiteboards and a multimedia center.
Many notable figures have graduated from I Liceum Ogólnokształcące. These include politicians and artists. Bronisław Geremek and Zbigniew Religa attended the school. Jarosław Abramow-Newerly is also an alumnus.
