Deep within Sydney’s suburban sprawl, a hidden gem awaits. Norfolk Reserve in Greenacre offers a tranquil escape, just a short distance from the city’s hustle and bustle. Norfolk Reserve isn’t just a patch of green. It’s a testament to community activism and a vital refuge for rare and endangered species. Established on land originally acquired for the Urban Transit Authority, Norfolk Reserve owes its existence to the Bankstown Bushland Society. In 1958, a bus depot opened nearby. This group lobbied to preserve the bushland as a buffer between the depot and residential areas. Their efforts paid off, securing a haven for both nature and local residents. This small reserve, surrounded by the Chullora Railway Workshops and urban development, is a surprisingly rich ecosystem. It’s a dry forest environment. You’ll find eucalyptus species like Woollybutt, Broadleaf Ironbark, Grey Box, and Beyers Ironbark. Occasionally, Paperbarks, such as Melaleuca nodosa and Melaleuca decora, form the canopy. Remarkably, 164 indigenous plant species have been recorded within Norfolk Reserve’s modest boundaries. Among these are rare gems like the downy wattle and the vine Vincetoxicum woollsii. This diverse flora supports a delicate ecosystem classified as Cooks River Clay Plain Scrub Forest. This community is endangered, with less than 1% of its original area remaining. Norfolk Reserve stands as a critical refuge. While the reserve’s vertebrate fauna is limited, it still provides habitat for bearded dragons, skinks, and various small lizards. In the past, rare species like the Regent Honeyeater and the Bent-wing Bat have been sighted nearby. It’s hoped that Norfolk Reserve can continue to offer them a safe haven. Ongoing bush regeneration efforts are crucial to the reserve’s survival. Volunteers work tirelessly to control invasive weeds like Blackberry, Paddy’s Lucerne, Bidens, and Fleabane. The persistent grass Ehrharta erecta remains a challenge. Despite these challenges, the overall health of the vegetation is considered fair to good, with the southern part of the reserve thriving. Norfolk Reserve stands as a testament to the power of community action. It’s a reminder that even within a bustling metropolis, pockets of natural beauty can be preserved and cherished.
