Stepping into Wan Chai District, have you ever wondered about the people who shape its vibrant tapestry? Right here, at the Office of District Councillor Clara Cheung, a remarkable story unfolds. The Office of District Councillor Clara Cheung isn’t just an office. It’s a testament to the power of art, activism, and community engagement. Clara Cheung, an artist and former district councillor, has woven her passions into the fabric of Hong Kong. Before entering politics, Clara co-founded C&G Artpartment with Gum Cheng in 2007. This dynamic duo organized collective and participatory art projects, often addressing Hong Kong’s art ecology and socio-political events. Their work even graced international stages like the Shanghai Biennale and Singapore Biennale. The Office of District Councillor Clara Cheung became a hub for her work as an elected member of the Wan Chai District Council from January 2020 to July 2021. Driven by her dedication to her community, she championed freedom of expression and tackled local issues. She brought her artistic lens to her political role. She used her platform to advocate for the community and address concerns like the “Tomorrow Lantau Project.” Clara’s commitment extended beyond the council chambers. She actively engaged with residents, organizing community events like the Mid-Autumn Festival fruit distribution in Happy Valley. Even after resigning from her council position due to political uncertainties, Clara continued to be a voice for Hong Kong. From her current base in the UK, she pursues a PhD, researching art exhibition history, and continues her artistic practice with a focus on performance art, diasporic experiences, and community art. The Office of District Councillor Clara Cheung may be a physical space, but its impact resonates far beyond its walls. It stands as a reminder of the individuals who dedicate themselves to shaping their communities through art, activism, and unwavering dedication.
