The Matzleinsdorfer Platz, a bustling hub in Vienna’s 5th district, Margareten, has witnessed centuries of transformation. This square, named after the historic Matzleinsdorf, was once a medieval settlement founded by a man named Mazilo. Right before our eyes, the ancient Roman road that once traversed this area, linking Matzleinsdorf to the Wienerberg, was replaced by a modern underground station. Imagine the hustle and bustle of this station, which serves the Viennese U-Bahn network.

Today, we stand here, with the air thick with the aroma of street food from nearby vendors. In 1906, the city council chose to preserve the name Matzleinsdorf by naming the square after it.

This square represents both history and modernity. Before the construction of the underground station, a historic Linientor with a Johannes-Nepomuk-Kapelle stood here. This Kapelle, built in 1623, was later rebuilt in 1748. The surrounding area hosted a lively market, now the Theodor-K\u00f6rner-Hof.

After World War II, the complex intersection became a traffic nightmare. To tame this chaos, in 1951, the first phase of Matzleinsdorfer Platz’s transformation happened, and it was completely rebuilt. In the 1960s, the second phase was initiated, and the tramway was moved underground. The construction was finished in 1969, and the Matzleinsdorfer Platz station connected to the Schnellbahn network.

This underground hub now serves as a vital transport junction for locals and tourists, a testament to a vibrant neighborhood that gracefully blends history and modern living.
