Established by law in 1993, the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine stands as a testament to medical excellence. This academy isn’t just a building. It’s the heart of specialist training in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Academy of Medicine plays a crucial role in shaping the future of healthcare. They organize, monitor, assess, and accredit all medical and dental specialist training. It’s a huge responsibility, ensuring the quality of specialists practicing in Hong Kong. The Academy’s authority is enshrined in the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Ordinance. This legal framework empowers them to uphold the highest standards of medical practice. The Hong Kong Academy of Medicine also oversees continuing medical education and professional development. This commitment to lifelong learning ensures that specialists stay at the forefront of their fields. Since a 1996 amendment to the Medical Registration Ordinance, the Academy’s role has expanded. They now play a key role in accrediting continuing medical education for specialist registration. This has become even more important with the increasing specialization within medicine. Between 1992 and 1997, the Academy Council recognized fifteen specialty colleges. Each college runs its own structured training programs. In 1998, the Specialist Register was established. To be listed, medical practitioners and dentists must meet stringent requirements. They must either be a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine or possess comparable qualifications. This rigorous process ensures that only highly qualified individuals can claim specialist status. The Hong Kong Academy of Medicine is more than just a regulatory body. It represents a commitment to excellence in healthcare. It’s a symbol of trust and assurance for the people of Hong Kong.
