The city became a cosmopolitan melting pot. It hosts the largest Arab, Italian, and Japanese diasporas in the world. It has ethnic neighborhoods like Bixiga, Bom Retiro, and Liberdade. People come from more than 200 other countries.

Sāo Paulo’s metropolitan area is Greater Sāo Paulo. It houses more than 20 million inhabitants. It ranks as the most populous in Brazil. Conurbation between the metropolitan areas around Greater Sāo Paulo created the Sāo Paulo Macrometropolis. It is the first megalopolis in the Southern Hemisphere with more than 30 million inhabitants.

Sāo Paulo is the largest urban economy in Latin America. It represents around 10% of the Brazilian GDP. The city is the headquarters of B3. This is the largest stock exchange of Latin America by market capitalization. The city has several financial districts. These districts are mainly around Paulista, Faria Lima and Berrini avenues. Sāo Paulo houses 63% of established multinationals in Brazil.

The city is the source of around one third of the Brazilian scientific production. The University of Sāo Paulo is often considered the best in Brazil and Latin America.
