Built in 1966 Sättra kyrka stands before you. It’s a striking example of mid-century church architecture. This wasn’t always its name though. Initially known as Sättra kyrka it later became the Church of Saint Maron.
Sättra kyrka’s history is unique. It was the first collaborative church between the EFS and the Swedish Church. This innovative partnership aimed to bridge denominational divides. Imagine the conversations the architects and clergy must have had. The result is a building designed for cooperation.
Architect Lennart Erkhammar designed Sättra kyrka. He crafted a square building with a concrete frame. The exterior and interior walls are clad in a material called vitrerat. This gives the church a smooth almost luminous quality. The copper-plated sloping roof reflects the Scandinavian light beautifully. Large windows flood the interior with natural light. A basement houses a community hall and kitchen. A separate free-standing bell tower stands nearby. It houses three bells. Their peals must have carried far across Sättra.
The church’s interior is equally interesting. The pulpit baptismal font and altar are made of Oregon pine. This was a change from the original concrete and stone-chip versions. The addition of an Allen digital organ in 2001 enhanced the worship experience.
Today Sättra kyrka serves the Maronite Church. It is one of the Eastern Catholic churches part of the Roman Catholic Church. The Swedish branch is also known as the Syriac-Maronite Catholic Church’s mission province in Sweden. The church is named after the Syrian monk Maron who lived around 410 AD. His movement is the namesake of the church. Since 2015 the Institute of Christ the King has held Mass in the older Roman form. This is in Latin. Arab-speaking Catholics also gather here. Their presence continues the church’s legacy of inclusivity.
Sättra kyrka’s story is far more than bricks and mortar. It’s a tale of collaboration faith and community. It’s a testament to Sweden’s religious diversity and architectural innovation. It stands as a quiet yet powerful symbol of unity in a constantly changing world. Take a moment to appreciate its simple elegance. Let its story resonate with you as you continue your journey.
