It’s an incredible transformation with the help of the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology, also known as the IMP. It all started in 1988 when the IMP was established as a research institute located in Vienna’s 3rd district. Back then, the area was known as St. Marx and was known for its slaughterhouses and industries. The IMP had ambitious goals to become one of Europe’s leading research institutes. The IMP didn’t just achieve that goal. It also seeded the development of the Vienna BioCenter, transforming St. Marx into a hub for life science research, business, and education. Today, the Vienna BioCenter has a mix of research organizations, biotech companies, and universities. The BioTech-Zentrum is one of the many buildings that are home to these institutions. The Vienna BioCenter is an international community with staff coming from more than 80 countries. With more than 140 research groups, the Vienna BioCenter is buzzing with activities and a shared language – English. The BioTech-Zentrum is a cornerstone of the Vienna BioCenter, one of Europe’s biggest and most dynamic life science hubs.
