Hear the echoes of faith within All Souls Chapel. This unassuming building on Norton Street holds a rich history. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to a community’s enduring spirit.

All Souls Chapel opened its doors on January 7 1882. The original structure and land cost a mere 800 pounds. That’s remarkably inexpensive for a church. Can you imagine building a place of worship for such a small sum?

But this wasn’t the final form of All Souls. The congregation soon outgrew the initial building. They built a new larger church. This new church was designed by the Blacket architectural firm. Edmund Blacket was a renowned architect of Anglican churches in the 19th century. The design is Early English Gothic. The building features simple brickwork sandstone details and a distinctive tile roof.

All Souls adapted to the changing times. In 1963 two of its tennis courts became a BP petrol station. This unusual arrangement lasted until 1993 when it was converted into a restaurant. The money helped fund vital maintenance projects. The noise of modern Sydney proved challenging. But All Souls received substantial funding. The Sydney Aircraft Noise Insulation Project invested nearly 2 million dollars. This impressive sum soundproofed the chapel. The project also provided a new roof double glazing seismic proofing and air conditioning.

A foundation stone bears a poignant inscription: A War Memorial. This stone was set by Rt Rev RC Kerle BA 7 4 62 Leland Parsons Rector. It speaks to the chapel’s role in community life.

All Souls even made headlines with its unique approach to worship. A cafe-style service was introduced. This modern approach aimed to connect with the ever-evolving Leichhardt community. The area’s post-World War II transformation into Sydney’s Little Italy helped shaped this innovative move. The chapel’s witty signs during the Soccer World Cup also attracted attention. One famously proclaimed Jesus saves better than Kalak.

The stories of All Souls Chapel continue. From its humble beginnings to its modern innovations this place of worship remains a vibrant part of Leichhardt’s heart. As you stand here today reflect on its enduring legacy.
