Gazing upon the Seyringer Kirche, one might initially see a simple, elegant structure. But its story, much like its patron saint, St. Rosalia, is one of hidden depths and transformations. The Seyringer Kirche sits on the Anger, the village green, in Seyring, a part of Gerasdorf bei Wien. This seemingly unassuming church has witnessed centuries of change, its very identity shifting with the times. Built around 1670, the Seyringer Kirche began as a modest, early Baroque structure. In 1840, it underwent a significant expansion. A grand entrance hall with a prominent tower was added to the southeast side. A new sacristy was also built on the northwest side, creating the church’s current form. Originally dedicated to the Feast of the Nativity of Mary in 1771, the Seyringer Kirche’s dedication changed over the years. It was then rededicated to St. Sebastian in 1833, followed by the Holy Trinity in 1883. Finally, it was placed under the patronage of St. Rosalia. The Seyringer Kirche also transitioned in its role within the church hierarchy. Starting as a vicariate of Pillichsdorf parish in 1686, it became an expositur church in 1939 and finally gained its independence as a parish in 1977. The church’s exterior shows a blend of early Baroque and classicist styles. The tower, a prominent feature, bears a triangular gable, a lunette portal, and an inscription from 1840 commemorating the donor, Franz Xaver von Beroldingen. Inside, the Seyringer Kirche houses a barrel-vaulted nave with supporting girders and pilasters. Interestingly, a fresco that once adorned the apse was painted over in 1964, leaving only traces of its existence. Much of the current interior decoration comes from the late 1970s, created by Robert Hammerstiel. Woodcuts of the four Evangelists and a print of the resurrected Christ adorn the walls. A copy of the “Lütticher Madonna” statue adds a touch of grace, and a series of color woodcuts depicts the Stations of the Cross. And a Franz Capek organ from around 1900 provides the music for the church’s services. The Seyringer Kirche is more than just a building. It’s a testament to resilience, adaptation, and the enduring power of faith within a changing world.
