Can an island hold a secret? Lilla Höggarn can. This almost perfectly round, wooded islet, just a stone’s throw from Stora Höggarn, whispers a tale of shifting fortunes. While Stora Höggarn bustled with taverns, manors, and oil refineries, Lilla Höggarn remained a tranquil counterpoint. Its story, though quieter, is no less intriguing. For centuries, Lilla Höggarn was part of the Djursholm estate, a verdant pasture for the sheep of Stora Höggarn’s farmers. Can you imagine those woolly creatures dotting the small island, their bleating echoing across the water? In 1879, Lilla Höggarn was sold to Robert Hernlund. The island transformed into a summer retreat. Two villas sprung up amongst the trees. A new pier welcomed boats ferrying vacationers eager to escape the city’s hustle. These summer residents relied on Stora Höggarn for their drinking water, a physical link that underscored the islands’ intertwined history. Today, Lilla Höggarn stands largely untouched, the foundations of the villas the only visible reminders of its brief inhabitation. The island is now owned by Margaret Marie Henrietta von Platen. Lilla Höggarn remains a haven of tranquility in the bustling Stockholm archipelago. As you gaze at this peaceful islet, remember its quiet story, a testament to the ever-changing tides of time and fortune.
