“Ready to join hundreds of journalists?” The Austin Run is more than just a race. It is a heartfelt campaign for a missing journalist.

The Austin Run virtual 5K occurs annually. It raises funds and awareness for Austin Tice. He has been unjustly detained in Syria since 2012.

Austin is a Marine combat veteran. He is also a seventh-generation Texan. He graduated from Georgetown University. Before his detention, he was an award-winning journalist. Austin went to Syria to report on the refugee crisis. He delivered dispatches to The Washington Post and McClatchy. Sadly, he was detained at a checkpoint near Damascus on August 14, 2012.

The National Press Club organizes the Austin Run. The run helps the Austin Tice fund. This fund supports the FBI reward for information. The goal is Austin’s safe return. If a reward isn’t given, the fund will help Austin transition back to his life. Also, a portion supports the Tice family’s advocacy.

Debra Tice is Austin’s mother. She said Austin is always on their minds. His absence is deeply felt. She appreciates the run. It helps people think about Austin. It shares his story. It supports efforts to bring him home.

Emily Wilkins is the National Press Club President. She emphasizes Austin’s long captivity. She wants him home now. The Club stands with the Tice family. They will continue until Austin is free. The Austin Tice fund is vital. She invites everyone to join them.

You can connect with others during the Austin Run. There are meet-ups in several cities. These include Colorado Springs, Houston, Richmond, and Tacoma. There is also a meet-up here in Washington D.C. If you cannot find a meet-up, you can create one.

Runners can register and get a t-shirt. To get a shirt, you must register by October 30. You can have it shipped. Or you can pick it up at the National Press Club.

Participants are encouraged to connect online. Use the hashtag RunForAustin. Share photos and results. Wear your virtual race bib proudly.

Runners can download finisher certificates. These certificates show their name and finish time. Share it digitally. Or print it to frame.
