“A single towering Zelkova tree once marked this spot” is the legend of Kumano Shrine. We are standing before a place of profound history. This is Kumano Shrine in Tokyo.

This Shinto shrine offers a glimpse into the past. It is a testament to the enduring power of faith. Kumano Shrine was founded in 1661.

The story begins with Kujuro Hyoe. He developed new rice fields. He sought a local deity for the land. He requested a spirit from Azusa Mitake Shrine. It was located in Musashi Province. Today, that is Tokyo’s Akiruno City.

Initially, the shrine was within Kujuro Hyoe’s residence. But in 1704, it moved. It relocated to a large Zelkova tree. This tree was called “Musashino no Ipponzuki”. It served as a landmark. Travelers on the Ome Kaido road used it.

The shrine became known as “Ipponzuki Shrine”. Kumano Shrine enshrines several deities. These include Izanagi-no-Okami and Izanami-no-Okami. They are revered as gods of marriage.

Local festivals enrich the shrine’s atmosphere. The Kumano Shrine Grand Festival features portable shrines. There are also taiko drum performances. Children carry miniature shrines.

The shrine also participates in the Kodaira Citizen’s Festival. Here, you can witness the carrying of portable shrines and the beating of taiko drums. These events foster community spirit.

Several smaller shrines reside within Kumano Shrine. These include Ipponzuki Shrine and Hachiman Shrine. There are also Tenjin Shrine and Inari Shrine. Other shrines include Hakusan Shrine, Kotohira Shrine, and Soreisha.

The towering Zelkova is gone now. But its legacy remains. It symbolizes connection and prosperity. The “Husband and Wife Tree” embodies marital harmony. It ensures lasting happiness.

Kumano Shrine is a short walk from Kodaira Station. It is easily accessible. So come. Experience the charm of this historical site. Embrace the spiritual ambiance of Kumano Shrine.
