What if these walls could talk? They would tell tales of faith. They would tell tales of community and architectural evolution at St. Simon-the-Apostle Anglican Church.

St. Simon-the-Apostle Anglican Church stands as a testament to Toronto’s rich history. It embodies the spirit of its diverse community. Founded in 1883, the Anglican parish began in a humble chapel. It was the chapel of St. James-the-Less.

Soon after, the congregation of St. Simon-the-Apostle Anglican Church grew. In 1887, they completed this very church. Architects Strickland and Symons designed it. Just five years later, it was enlarged to twice its original size.

In 1906, the parish hall and rectory were built. Architect Eden Smith designed them. St. Simon’s has been a spiritual home to many Torontonians. Its choir has been renowned for its excellence. The Toronto Historical Board recognized this in 1982. They installed a commemorative plaque.

Look closely at the architecture of St. Simon-the-Apostle Anglican Church. You will see a blend of styles. The original 1888 church exhibits an Elizabethan style. This was designed by Strickland and Symonds. The 1907 parish hall reflects Eden Smith’s design. A modern chapel and vestry were added in 1952.

In 1999, the parish engaged Spencer R. Higgins. His firm addressed accessibility issues. They improved the visibility of the church. They also enhanced administrative and service facilities. Crucially, they upgraded St. Simon’s shelter for the homeless.

A fully-accessible entrance was added on Bloor Street. It features a portico, tower and courtyard garden. This addition links the historic church and parish hall. It provides access to an elevator. The elevator connects the church to the basement. Redundant architectural elements were salvaged. Stained glass, windows and stonework were reused. The design blends seamlessly with the arts-and-crafts style.

The new facilities include mechanical space. They also include toilets, cloakrooms and storage. These are essential for a busy community facility. A private meditation garden was created. A dramatic steeple marks the new entrance of St. Simon-the-Apostle Anglican Church. The construction cost $2.7 million.

The facility is used seven days a week. It serves the parish and surrounding community. Services include support for the homeless. It also offers English as a second language programs. Child day-care is also provided here. Since 1883, St. Simon’s has thrived as an inner-city parish. It has maintained a strong choral music tradition.

In 2016, St. Simon the Apostle amalgamated with St. Peter’s Carlton Street. Together, they formed the Church of St. Peter and St. Simon-the-Apostle. St. Simon-the-Apostle Anglican Church stands at the intersection of several communities. Rosedale, St. Jamestown and Cabbagetown surround it. It continues to serve the growing needs of Toronto.
