“Fancy a camping trip away from it all?” That’s the question many ask before venturing to Yuen Ng Fan Campsite. This small campsite offers a unique escape in Sai Kung East Country Park. It’s a place where experienced hikers and campers can enjoy superb views.
Yuen Ng Fan Campsite is located on a hill at Nam Fung Wan. It sits right opposite Nam Fung Wan and the West Dam of High Island Reservoir. From here, visitors can overlook islands like Kau Sai Chau and Tai Tau Chau. The views alone make the trek worthwhile.
Yuen Ng Fan is a small campsite. That means there are less than 20 tent spaces. It is more intimate than larger, more crowded sites. This makes it ideal for those seeking peace and quiet in nature.
Getting to Yuen Ng Fan Campsite requires some effort. From Sai Kung Bus Terminal, take Bus 94. Alternatively, on Sundays and public holidays, take Bus 96R from Diamond Hill MTR Bus Terminal. Both buses will take you to Pak Tam Chung.
From Pak Tam Chung, begin on the first stage of the MacLehose Trail. Follow Man Yee Road toward High Island Reservoir. After about 45 minutes, you will see a junction. This is where Sheung Yiu Country Trail meets Man Yee Road. It is on a secondary dam before the West Dam.
Turn onto the country trail. Walk for another 15 minutes. You will reach the Yuen Ng Fan Campsite. The hike is strenuous. It is best suited for experienced hikers and campers.
Once at Yuen Ng Fan Campsite, you’ll find basic facilities. There are barbeque pits plus benches and tables. Water comes from a stream. Keep in mind that this is a seasonal supply. There are dry toilet pits for hygienic facilities.
A highlight near Yuen Ng Fan Campsite is the Chong Hing Water Sports Centre. It is at the West Dam of High Island Reservoir. Here, you can find various water activities. Surfing, windsurfing, sampan rides, canoeing, and kayaking are all available. Most activities take place in an artificial lake.
Also nearby is the High Island Reservoir. It was built in Sai Kung East Country Park. It was one of the “Ten Engineering Wonders in Hong Kong”. This was organized by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers in 2000. The biggest challenge was closing off both ends of the Kwun Mun Channel. This channel separated High Island from the peninsula.
