Founded in 1912 the Schickhardt-Gymnasium stands proudly in Stuttgart. This impressive building complex wasn’t always a school. Construction began in 1911. Architect Albert Pantle designed the neoclassical style. The Schickhardt-Gymnasium and a boys’ school shared the campus. Both schools remain independent today.

The Schickhardt-Gymnasium’s history is rich. It began as a Realschule a modern school type. It offered higher education without Latin. This suited the needs of Stuttgart’s growing middle class. The school became a full secondary school in 1941. It was renamed Schickhardt-Oberschule.

World War II damaged the building. Unlike many city schools it remained usable. After the war it housed students from destroyed schools. The Dillmann-Oberschule the Friedrich-Eugens-Oberschule and the Eberhard-Ludwigs-Gymnasium were among them.

The name Oberschule changed to Gymnasium in the 1950s. The Schickhardt-Gymnasium received its current name in 1954. A significant expansion was added in 1971. It housed the science departments.

The Schickhardt-Gymnasium became a sports-focused school in the mid-1980s. It was among the first schools offering a sports advanced placement course. This focus increased with a sports profile in 1996/1997. The school partnered with the Stuttgart Olympic Training Center. It became an Elite School of Sports in 2001.

Today the Schickhardt-Gymnasium boasts a sports and science profile. All students receive broad exposure to both. Students choose a focus later. English is taught from grade 5. Latin or French begins in grade 6.

The sports profile offers four hours of sports per week in grades 8-10. It includes team and individual sports. Two hours of sports theory cover training movement physiology and nutrition. Students can choose sports as an advanced placement course. The school actively promotes sports competitions and mentor training. Trips include skiing and surfing.

As an Elite School of Sports the Schickhardt-Gymnasium supports elite athletes. Students can extend their final years to three years. This balances schoolwork and training demands. The school works with sports clubs to promote harmony between training and school. This includes the Württemberg Football Association (girls) and the TVB 1898 Stuttgart (boys handball).

The science profile offers project-based learning. It covers areas like bionics programming nutrition and technical drawing. Students can participate in exchange programs. Partners include schools in France the USA China and India.

The Schickhardt-Gymnasium is part of a national network. It’s committed to digital education and was a pilot school for mobile devices in the classroom. The legacy of this building this school and these students endures. The Schickhardt-Gymnasium is more than a building. It is a testament to learning growth and the pursuit of excellence.
